Barbie Doll
when you buy your grandchild a Barbie doll do you ever think about?
the cutouts and dolls we had as role models when we were growing up? I had betsy wetsys, Alice a cut-out doll, Little Lulu and Tubby comics....none of them were svelt like Barbie. What toys were your role models?
Betsy McCall was a paper doll in McCall's magazine. I'd glue her to cardboard, cut out the clothes in the magazine and I'd make my own clothes out of paper and crayons. I'd even iron the clothes to get different color looks.
I had Little LuLu, too and Katy Keene comics as well. I thought she was SO cool!
I got a Barbie when I was 11 in 1959 the year they came out. Black and white striped suit and evil looking eyes. I preferred the Revlon doll that was a precursor to Barbie. Lots more normal looking but a fashion doll all the same. And a Ginny doll which I think was made by Madame Alexander. I had a Shirley Temple doll in the late 50's early 60's, too and I made her all kinds of clothes by hand.
Wish I still had all that!
