What does this knitting instruction mean?
I am learning to knit from a book and I'm trying to knit a sweater for my dog. I've reached the part where the hood is attached, but I have no clue what I'm suppose to do!
Hood: Place markers along cast on edge on 6th(7th-9th-10th) st from each edge. (RS). Pick up knit 29 (33-41-63) sts between markers along cast on edge. Purl 1 row.
Am I suppose to cast on 6 stitches at the beginning and end of a row so I can put a marker on the "6th st from each edge"? After the last knitting instruction I end up with 26(36-42-66) sts. How does it get to 29 (33-41-63) sts?

If you read the instruction just before that, it says, "Leave sts on a spare needle." Make sure you do that! You can use a scrap piece of yarn to leave the 26 stitches on, if you prefer. Then, you will be placing two markers on the cast on edge, each 6 sts from the side. Then, with your needle (neither needle should have ANY stitches at this point), pick up and knit 29 sts. In the video, it shows two methods of picking up stitches. I recommend the first method, using a knitting needle.
