Tips for beginning Wilton Cake Decorating student (through Michaels)...?
Just started the Level 1 Wilton Cake Decorating course through the local Michaels. This is my first step into the decorating arena, but I am very serious about it.
What I am wondering is, where and how can I save money on the supplies? I am a new dad with a wife in grad school--need to save wherever we can. But this is like "me going to school," so I am very serious about going through...
The Wilton professional kit sounds outstanding--not sure I have the $80 or so to spend on it. (That would be using the latest 40% off coupon.) Looks like I need...
Cake leveler, lifter, doilies, turntable/stand, bag holder, flower lifter...
Did some research online to see where I can save, but still looks cheaper in store.
Meringue powder--necessary? Teacher (of course) says it is...any substitutions?
Clear extracts--suggestions?
Any tips on how to be successful but save money will be great. Thank you!
Agree with above about Michaels, especially when you can get one of their 40% off coupons. You may want to buy the Wilton basics as long as you are in the Wilton class, but there are other brands, such as Ateco, out there. If you are really serious and thinking of building a business eventually, go to local bakery suppliers or online.
Meringue powder? Well, you do need it for their icing recipe...but there's a million other icing recipes out there that don't use it and taste a heck of a lot better. It is handy for royal icing, though, when you get to that level.
Clear extracts? Never use them...then again, I don't do much in white and I prefer real vanilla.
Tools: Home Depot is your friend!! Have my best "spatulas" from the drywall dept. Wide, fast and quick. Leftover sheets of masonite or other type of particle board for solid cake bases. Cheap doweling. Take a walk through sometime and try to look at everything from a cake decorator point of view instead of a carpenter's. (Wish they made icing bags!)
Whatever you do, don't skimp on confectioner's sugar (you want real cane sugar no matter what) or you can end up with a mess, and a really good shortening.

Books: Go to the library. If they don't have much, use their on-line catalog. Any book from any library in their consortium can be shipped to your library for borrowing. I check a book out this way before I spend my money buying it.
Wish you the best of luck...it's going to be frustrating..but hopefully you'll end up loving it like the rest of us.
