Prong Transfer
switching out the electrical transfer box for new generator?
I have an older house with a transfer box that has a 3 prong outlet, the generator I use to use works with this but it wasn't very big so I got a new one. The new one used a 4 prong quick lock. What do I do now? Can I switch out the transfer box or is there any type of adapters out there that will work. Will the existing wires for the box be enough for a quick lock style? This box doesn't look liek it was installed when the house was built It was put in by the previous owner. Any info will be helpful.
new ranges and dryers also use 4 wire instead of 3 wire. the extra wire is the ground. on a three wire system you have two hot wires and a neutral,,,on a four wire system you have two hot wires a neutral and a ground. change the 3 wire outlet on the transfer box to four wire just run a ground wire to the fourth wire terminal and bond it to the transfer box if there is no grounding lug.
