Witch Cat
I got a dog yesterday it's a girl and I have a male cat. Will they get along?
I want to know if my female dog, witch is older and new to my home and my male cat, witch I've had about 2 years will they get along? I am afraid of my cat runnig away. They have seen eachother already and the cat hissed. Later I tried again and the cat growled. Will my cat disown me and run away? He is an indoor outdoor cat as well as the dog.
It will take times (could be up to a couple of months) but eventually they will learn to be in the same house. Your cat will probably hiss and growl for a couple of weeks. Try to hold your dog from running after your cat if you can and most importantly provide places in height where you cat can climb and look over the room quitely . Cat tree are the best for that. Place the cat tree so that it has a view toward the entrace. Be sure to provide a place where your cat will be able to sleep without fear of being surprised by the dog.
If The cat and the dog gets into a fight, do not interveen unless the dog is trying to bite and you feel someone might get hurt. Your cat needs to establish his dominance (your dog will probably not make a case of that and will either ignore your cat or flee). He will either succeed or not depending on your dog temper. In either case it's OK as long as they establish the dominance ladder. If you interveen, you will only delay the inevitable.
Be patient and let them sort it out. Don't be worry for all the hissing and growling. Contrary to what most people think, it's not because they don't like the person or the animal they are growling at, it's because they want to impress them and establish their superiority. Most dog will submit to the cat as they don't have that need as strong as cat do.
